Creativity Remains Constant, Only the Tools Change
Today, in our "Communication Evolution" column, let us delve into this marvelous thing we call "art."
Unchanging Creative Mindset, Evolving Tools
The essence of art lies in the expression of emotion. Throughout human history, the underlying creative mindset has remained remarkably consistent; what shifts is merely the equipment in our hands.
In the past, royal families commissioned court painters who spent months or years detailing canvases just to preserve the beautiful memory of a family portrait. Later, driven by technological advancement, photography emerged, allowing people to hire photographers to capture family gatherings and freeze moments in time instantly.
Today, in the era of artificial intelligence, we can even leverage AI generative tools to synthesize a seamless photograph blending current generations with departed loved ones. Whether using oil paint, film, or algorithms, the ultimate underlying purpose remains identical: to express profound affection for family and to cherish the moments spent together. We are simply using different tools across different eras.
Defining Art: Technology as the Skeleton, Humanity as the Warmth
What, then, is the true definition of art? Many people currently harbor fear and anxiety that AI will completely replace human creators. However, I hold a fundamentally different view.
Art is the ultimate medium for human emotional expression. Whether manifested through intricate paintings, moving music, powerful dance, or any other artistic modality, a piece becomes uniquely compelling precisely because of the distinct human touch and expression poured into it. This uniqueness is where the true charm of art resides.
Therefore, even if we leverage AI or sophisticated technological tools in the creative workflow, a piece can still be recognized as genuine art as long as it is infused with authentic human emotion, warmth, and soul. Technology dictates efficiency, but humanity determines depth.

From 1990s STEM to Modern STEAM: The Call for Art in Tech Dominance
回顧 1990 年代,全世界教育的主流是 STEM(Science 科學、Technology 科技、Engineering 工程、Mathematics 數學),強調邏輯、標準答案、效率與產值。
To address the imbalance between technology and humanity, global education is undergoing a critical paradigm shift. In the 1990s, the educational mainstream was dominated by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), which heavily prioritized logic, standard answers, efficiency, and industrial output.
Today, however, this framework has evolved into STEAM, boldly integrating a pivotal component right at its core: A for Art. This global movement was initiated and championed by Professor John Maeda, former Associate Director of the MIT Media Lab and former President of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). As a legendary pioneer mastering both computer science and visual design, he famously argued that technology without art becomes cold, detached, and soulless.
Presently, top-tier academic institutions and global enterprises place unprecedented emphasis on arts education. Regardless of whether the next generation aspires to become professional artists or high-tech engineers, art cultivation trains essential skill sets:
The power of imagination and insight to build from zero to one, breaking traditional boundaries.
The deliberate craftsmanship required to translate abstract visions into precise, tangible results.
The capability to honor cultural values and diverse perspectives, enabling deeper communication.
In an era of ubiquitous AI capabilities, these distinctly human traits represent the ultimate irreplaceable competencies.
