The Detours That Make the Flavor of Life

When people think of Anthony Bourdain, they picture the charismatic culinary traveler wandering the world with fearless curiosity. Yet, he wasn't born a celebrity chef or a bestselling author; he was a line cook grinding through the chaotic kitchens of New York.

His journey as an author began with the culinary crime novel Bone in the Throat—which wasn't even the first book he truly intended to write. Fame arrived later when Kitchen Confidential laid bare the unfiltered underbelly of the restaurant world.

For anyone wondering how a self-proclaimed culinary “liar" transformed into the first true rock-and-roll chef of television, the movie TONY captures that wild journey in vivid detail. Watching his story resonated with me deeply.

When I was young, teaching was the last career I ever wanted to pursue. Back then, it felt like teachers never really listened or gave kids the education they actually needed. My only childhood dream was to become a singer. While my father was strictly against it, my brother quietly encouraged me to sign up for singing competitions, and my mother even took me to meet with the hottest, top-tier producers of the time.

The outcome is obvious: I didn’t become a pop star. Life happened, fatherhood arrived, and deep down, I knew I lacked the conventional celebrity mold.

Yet life has a wonderful sense of humor. Twenty-five years later, with my children fully grown, I have indeed become a singer. Between my training and consulting work, I perform as an independent busker, sing at restaurants, and perform at weddings and corporate events.

A few days ago, an old classmate saw a video clip of me singing and told me that my voice sounds just as good as before, but with even more depth and soul now. I guess my life experiences have made it easier to truly connect with the story behind every song.

I truly believe I'm far happier and more at ease today than I ever would have been if I had become a professional singer back then.

I often share this thought during university talks: I truly love to sing, but if my livelihood had depended entirely on it, that pure joy might have withered under commercial pressure.

Anthony Bourdain is the perfect parallel. Had he started out simply as a writer in a quiet room, without enduring the heat, grit, and sweat of the kitchen line, his writing would never have possessed the raw, soul-stirring authenticity that moved millions.

The detours in life are never wasted; they are the very ingredients that give our story its richest flavor.
