Many people feel disappointed with life, not because life has treated them unfairly, but because they hold onto the wrong expectations.

It is just like walking into a theater with high hopes for the sequel of a classic movie, only to walk out feeling completely let down.
But was the movie truly terrible? Or was it simply "different from what you had anticipated"?
This gap in expectation constantly creeps into our relationships, our careers, our friendships, and even our carefully planned travels.
Expectations: The Scripts We Project onto Others
You spent days planning a surprise birthday party for your partner, only to have them look drained and even slightly annoyed instead of touched.
"Why are they so ungrateful? They don't appreciate anything I do!"
The reality:
You already knew they are introverted and wanted nothing more than a quiet day to themselves. Yet, in the name of a "surprise," you forced them to mask up and socialize, leaving them utterly exhausted.
You stayed up all night perfecting a presentation for the next day's meeting, only for the team to spend the entire time discussing another urgent project, completely bypassing your report.
"Management doesn't value my hard work. My efforts mean nothing here."
Your manager actually trusts your capability so much that they felt your part was flawless and required no discussion, choosing instead to allocate precious meeting time to address fire drills elsewhere.
Shifting Expectations is Not an Invitation to "Give Up”
Saying this is not to suggest that we should adopt a passive, "why bother" attitude.
Rather, it is about recalibrating the mindset behind our efforts.
When we give to those we love, if we carry the quiet expectation of "since I did this, you must return the favor under 'my terms,'" we are setting ourselves up for heartbreak. The moment love and effort are bound to the expectation of equivalent returns, they cease to be gifts and instead become debts.
Nobody did anything wrong. More often than not, we were simply holding the wrong script from the very beginning, driven by misguided expectations.
Learning to separate "what others actually need" from "what we personally expect" is the ultimate milestone in communication evolution. Once you stop writing scripts for others to follow, you will find that life holds far fewer disappointments—and far more unexpected, beautiful surprises.
