Adaptability is the Ultimate Cultural Identity
在 1999 年決定來台灣定居之前,對出生於巴西的我而言,「台灣」這兩個字是一片模糊的剪影。
Before making Taiwan my permanent home in 1999, the word "Taiwan" was merely a blurry silhouette to me, a boy born and raised in Brazil.
小時候對這裡微薄的記憶,都跟「感官」有關:記憶中爺爺住在寒冷的陽明山上,他總喜歡一邊刷牙一邊唱歌逗我玩,還打趣地問我相不相信他能邊唱歌邊咬我——接著,他就把假牙拿了下來;又或者是暑假隨父母回台北六張犁時,那條還沒有捷運的街道。
My sparse childhood memories of this island were deeply sensory. I remembered my grandfather living on a chilly Yangmingshan, entertaining me by brushing his teeth while singing. He’d slyly ask if I believed he could bite me while singing—and then, out would come his dentures. I also remembered staying near the Liuzhangli intersection during summer vacations with my parents, long before the MRT lines existed.
當時我中文生疏,最愛躲進巷口的 7-ELEVEN,因為在那裡不用開口說話。我會買一份大亨堡淋上醬油(聽起來很怪,但相信我,非常美味),再來一包王子麵和一杯思樂冰,然後滿足地走到附近的梅花戲院看一場電影。
My Chinese was broken at best, so I found sanctuary in the local 7-ELEVEN where no words were required. I’d buy a Hot Dog—drizzled with soy sauce (it sounds bizarre, but trust me, it’s delicious)—a packet of Prince Noodles, and a Slurpee, before heading to the nearby Plum Blossom Cinema to catch a movie.
這是我對台灣最初的文化體驗:日常、零碎、充滿異質感的融合。那時我還不懂,這種「在不熟悉的環境裡,用自己的方式找到最舒適生存姿態」的畫面,正是台灣文化最核心的關鍵字——適應力。
This was my first taste of Taiwanese culture: mundane, fragmented, yet a beautifully mismatched fusion. What I didn’t realize back then was that this very act—finding a comfortable way to survive in an unfamiliar environment—perfectly mirrored the ultimate keyword of Taiwanese culture: Adaptability.
文化,不是純淨的複製品,而是演進的現在進行式
Culture is Not a Pure Derivative, But evolution in Motion
常聽身邊的朋友說:「台灣沒有自己的文化,因為這裡的一切不是外來的,就是荷蘭、日本殖民與中國傳統文化交織後的產物。」在他們眼裡,彷彿只有純粹的原生歷史才配稱作文化。我對此深表懷疑。
I often hear friends say, "Taiwan doesn't have a culture of its own; everything here is imported, a byproduct of Dutch and Japanese colonization mixed with traditional Chinese culture." To them, it seems only uncontaminated, indigenous history qualifies as true culture. I beg to differ.
如果這種「純血論」成立,那麼我出生的巴西,這個在哥倫布發現新大陸後才逐步建立的國家,是否也算沒有文化?那美國和加拿大呢?事實上,這些國家都擁有舉世聞名且鮮明的文化標識。因為文化的本質從來不是「刻意與過去畫清界線」,而是擁抱過去、融合現在、內化成生活方式。文化,本來就是一場因地制宜的「進化論」。
If we look through that restrictive lens, does Brazil—the country of my birth, forged after Columbus stumbled upon the New World—lack a culture? What about the United States or Canada? In reality, these nations possess incredibly distinct, world-renowned cultural identities. True culture is never about drawing hard lines to isolate oneself from history; it is about embracing the past, integrating the present, and evolving it into a unique way of life. Culture, by definition, is a living process of evolution and adaptation.

Brazilian culture is a vibrant collision of European colonizers, African traditions, and indigenous Amazonian heritage. Its pinnacles are Carnival and Samba. These are neither stiff European court dances nor purely African spiritual rituals; they are a seamless blend of African rhythms, European pageantry, and Latin American optimism in the face of adversity—a raw, infectious celebration of life that adapts to any hardship.
美國與加拿大 (USA & Canada):開拓、包容與環境的和解
Pioneering Spirit and the Mosaic of Coexistence
美加兩國同樣是在新大陸上建立的移民社會。美國將各國移民的夢想,提煉成打破古典樂框架、強調即興與自由的「爵士樂 (Jazz)」;而加拿大則在嚴酷的北國氣候中,將不同族群的文化拼貼成「文化馬賽克 (Cultural Mosaic)」,藉由對第一民族的尊重、楓糖節與冰上曲棍球,演繹出與自然、與異族共存的強大包容力。
Both the U.S. and Canada are immigrant societies built upon a new continent. The U.S. distilled global dreams into Jazz—a genre that shattered classical constraints through improvisation and freedom. Canada, facing a harsh northern climate, pieced disparate heritages into a Cultural Mosaic, using its respect for First Nations, Maple Syrup Festivals, and Ice Hockey to demonstrate a powerful capacity for coexisting with nature and diverse communities.
台灣 (Taiwan):彈性、高CP值與無所不在的 「環境順應力」
Resilience, High CP Value, and Hyper-Adaptability)
回到台灣,這裡最顯著、最生猛的文化,正是那股「因應環境快速調適、無孔不入的生存與商業能力」。台灣人不僅追求方便,更追求「高CP值」(性價比)。在台灣人的血液裡,似乎內建了一種雷達:哪裡有機會,台灣人就會出現在哪裡。最經典的歷史證明就是「夜市文化」。
Returning to Taiwan, the most prominent, vibrant cultural trait is an extraordinary, quick-witted capacity to adapt to environments and seize commercial opportunities. Taiwanese people don't just demand convenience; they pursue high "CP value" (cost-performance ratio). It seems embedded in the Taiwanese DNA: wherever an opportunity arises, Taiwanese people will be there to capture it. The ultimate historical proof of this is the birth of Night Market culture.
早期台灣人盛行去宮廟拜拜,聰明的攤商敏銳地察覺到,宮廟外聚集的虔誠人潮就是巨大的市場機會,於是紛紛前來擺攤,久而久之,竟演變成了如今名聞遐邇的夜市景觀。這種「有機會就上、迅速適應市場需求」的精神延伸到現代,就變成了大街小巷密度極高、全面包容生活需求的 24小時便利商店、密集超商與深夜咖啡廳。這種彈性的生活環境,正是許多外國人一旦來過台灣,就再也離不開、戒不掉的真正原因。
In the early days, heading to temples to pray was a massive part of daily life. Savvy vendors instantly recognized that the crowds gathering outside these temples represented a goldmine of market potential. They set up shop, and over time, these religious gatherings evolved into world-famous night markets. This opportunistic, adaptive spirit continues today through the ubiquitous 24-hour convenience stores, hyper-dense supermarkets, and late-night cafes that cater to every facet of life around the clock—the exact reason why so many foreigners find it impossible to leave.
台灣科技業的秘密武器:把「適應力」變成全球通行的超能力

這種骨子裡的「適應力」,不只體現在夜市與超商,更是台灣人在全球科技產業中獨當一面的終極超能力。
This innate "adaptability" does not just manifest in night markets and convenience stores; it is the ultimate superpower that allows Taiwanese professionals to command the global technology industry.
在變幻莫測的科技與半導體供應鏈中,世界之所以離不開台灣,正是因為台灣人將「速度、彈性、高CP值、因應客戶需求快速調整」的文化特質發揮到了極致。當全球市場出現一個新的機會,或者是供應鏈面臨突如其來的斷鏈危機,台灣科技業總能在最短時間內調整製程、重組架構、交出最完美的解決方案。

We Represent the Cultural Evolution
文化從來不是靜止的古董,它如同語言、如同科技,是一場大型的「溝通進化論」。
Culture is never a static antique frozen in time. Like language, and like technology, it is an ongoing process of communication and evolution.
當我現在坐在台北的深夜咖啡廳裡,回想起小時候在 7-ELEVEN 吃著醬油大亨堡、去梅花戲院看電影的自己,我深刻體會到:台灣不是沒有文化,台灣的文化,就是它驚人的包容力、適應力與創造力。
As I sit in a late-night Taipei cafe today, reminiscing about the young boy who ate soy-sauce hot dogs at 7-ELEVEN and watched movies at the Plum Blossom Cinema, it hits me clearly: Taiwan does not lack a culture. Taiwan’s culture is its spectacular capacity for inclusivity, adaptability, and creativity.
我們不需要跟過去畫清界線,因為此時此刻,我們如何運用這股超能力去融合過去、翻轉未來,我們就是文化本身。
We do not need to draw clean lines to separate ourselves from our complicated history. Because right here, right now, in the way we leverage this superpower to blend our past and pivot into the future—we are culture itself.
