Materialists: Show me your "Material Lists".

“Objectification” is a major concern in modern society, and when this mindset permeates intimate relationships, it gives rise to thought-provoking works like Materialists. Directed and written by Celine Song, and starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, this 2025 romantic drama offers a direct and incisive look at the seemingly pragmatic, yet ultimately skewed, "material lists" that men and women today use when seeking partners.

The Plot: A Quest for "Perfection"

The film Materialists centers on a group of individuals navigating the New York metropolitan dating scene. Much like "procurement managers" for Michelin restaurants, they tirelessly compile and cross-reference all sorts of "perfect ingredients": from height, weight, appearance, annual income, hairline, and cup size, to hobbies and family health records – nothing is left out. They firmly believe that by assembling these conditions, they can piece together a "match made in heaven." However, as the plot unfolds, audiences discover that these meticulously selected "ingredients" do not, as expected, result in the "most delicious dish." Instead, in their pursuit of these external criteria, the characters gradually lose themselves and miss out on the "intangible assets" that truly bring happiness.

The Blind Spot of the "Material List": Overlooking the Complementary Power of Imperfections

The film's English title, Materialists, is a clever pun, referring both to "materialists" and subtly breaking down into "material list," accurately encapsulating the film's core idea. In contemporary society, we tend to view love and marriage as a transaction rather than an investment. We focus on acquiring each other's "tangible assets" but often overlook the importance of jointly creating the "intangible assets" of life.

We constantly search for the "perfect partner," yet rarely pause to consider what true perfection actually means. Much like that humorous yet thought-provoking joke: "The son-in-law complained to his father-in-law: 'Your daughter has so many flaws.' The father-in-law replied: 'Exactly, otherwise why would she choose you?'" Doesn't this illustrate that it's precisely our imperfections that create unique complementarities and acceptance, allowing two people to choose each other and grow together?

Through a series of realistic scenes, the film reveals the absurdity of being overly fixated on external conditions. Even if you find a "perfect candidate" who meets all your criteria, you might discover a lack of genuine connection, resonance, and the motivation for both of you to become better for each other and for your shared future. The key to delicious food isn't the expense or rarity of the ingredients, but the chef's passion for cooking and the desire to cook for someone. Similarly, the longevity and happiness of a relationship ultimately depend on whether both parties can make each other happy, and the love, understanding, and support they jointly create.

Marriage: A Joint Creation of Intangible Assets

Marriage should not be a mere transaction but a profound investment. It's not about acquiring each other's tangible assets, but about jointly creating the intangible assets of life – the unquantifiable yet crucial love, trust, tolerance, understanding, and shared growth. These intangible assets are the cornerstones that sustain a relationship towards eternity.

Materialists serves as a wake-up call, urging us to re-examine our definition of "perfection." Perhaps a truly "match made in heaven" doesn't stem from a perfect "material list," but from two hearts willing to embrace each other's imperfections and work together to create happiness.
